Dolly Parton’s rise to fame was closely connected to country music star Porter Wagoner. After joining The Porter Wagoner Show, she gained national exposure and built a successful musical partnership with him. Parton eventually wanted the freedom to pursue her own career, inspiring songs such as “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” and “I Will Always Love You.” Although their separation initially appeared amicable, Wagoner later sued Parton for $3 million, claiming he was entitled to a share of her growing success.
The lawsuit was eventually settled for $1 million, but litigation can cost far more than the amount written on a settlement agreement. It consumes time, money, energy, and attention while often damaging relationships beyond repair. Parton could have allowed that experience to define how she viewed Wagoner for the rest of her life. Instead, she later made a decision that demonstrated how forgiveness can be more powerful than winning a dispute.
Years after the lawsuit, Wagoner experienced serious financial trouble and needed to sell his music catalog. Parton quietly purchased the rights without revealing that she was the buyer, sparing him the embarrassment of knowing that his former protégé was acquiring his life’s work. She then met with Wagoner and returned the entire catalog to him as a gift. Her decision allowed him to retain his music and helped ensure that his children could inherit their father’s creative legacy.

Dolly Parton’s song, “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” was an anthem of hope for her newfound independence after leaving Porter Wagoner. And she wrote “I Will Always Love You” as a way of saying goodbye to Porter Wagoner.
A lot of people don’t know it, but Dolly Parton got her start on The Porter Wagoner Show. Porter Wagoner was a pretty famous country music star in his own right back in the day, back when Dolly was first coming onto the scene. And they brought her onto the show, and they signed contracts. And Porter was supposed to get about 15% of everything that Dolly made from being on his show.
After a few years, Dolly left Porter under what was thought to be pretty amicable terms. But about five years later, Porter sued Dolly for $3 million, saying that she owed him money based on her newfound success after she left. Dolly ended up settling with him for $1 million.
Now, any of you who have ever been sued or have sued anybody, you know that they can be a pretty cantankerous, rancorous, and bile-inducing exercise in life. They’re not fun. Litigation is not fun. It’s expensive. It’s very time-consuming. Its energy suck is tremendous on your life when you are suing someone or being sued.
But years later, after they’d settled, after all this was over, Porter was almost bankrupt. Meanwhile, Dolly was really on a sharp upward trajectory with her career. She was doing great. But Porter, to survive, was forced to sell his entire music catalog, trying to raise money just to keep the lights on and keep food on the table.
So Dolly went out and secretly bought Porter’s music catalog, bought all of his music rights from him. And Porter didn’t know that it was Dolly who was buying up all his music because she wanted to spare his pride by not letting him know that his protégé was now actually buying up all of his music rights.
Then she did something that most of us wouldn’t do after we’ve been through litigation, after we’ve been through that anger-inducing exercise, one of the most contentious things that you can do between two people.
She met with Porter, and she gifted all of the songs back to him. She just gave them back to him for free.
She did that out of forgiveness, gratitude, and to ensure that his children would inherit their father’s legacy.
That act of kindness cemented their reconciliation after all that ugliness of the lawsuit, and it erased any bitterness that was left between them.
I’ve heard it said that holding a grudge is like drinking poison and hoping that the other person dies.
Dolly could have held a grudge against Porter, bought up his entire catalog to prove him wrong, and to show him how far he had fallen and how high she had soared since she had left him.
But instead, Dolly’s humility, respect, and full forgiveness allowed her to move forward as the natural humanitarian she was, helping not only Porter and his family, but millions of people for generations to come.
She was a little lady with a big heart and a legacy that will continue to survive and thrive.
